Annie, Julia, Jessie, and Eva

George Buist and Laura Irene endured many hardships.  But none were as difficult as losing a child, and they lost three as infants, one as a toddler, and one as a young adult.  As soon as she could gather information and complete forms, Laura Irene Bishop Davis submitted the names of her children for temple work.  She also dedicated her life to the continuing work of gathering names of friend and extended family to have their work completed also.

Annie Adora Davis was the first child born just three years after their marriage.  We suspect they may have had miscarriages before, however, there are not records to support this.  Laura has a sister 1/2 sister Annie and her mother’s middle name was Adora. At the time Annie was born, Bethera was a logging camp without adequate drainage, water or sewer.   Annie was born Feb 6,1883 and died Sept 17,1884.  South Carolina Health records show that in the Bethera area, there were many who died of water poisoning in the summer of 1884.  They finally identified that the sewers were seeping into the drinking water.  Others of Annie’s family who died from that same area that same year were her infant cousin Mary Litchfield, Greart Aunt Francis Williams, Great Uncle William Arnold Davis.

Julia Ella Hawes Davis was born Jan 15, 1885 and died Mar 16,1885.  There are no indicating records of what happened during that time.

Jessie Orin Davis was born Mar 2, 1896 and died Nov 12, 1898.  This must have been one of the harder challenges for GB and Laura.  Dewey is born in March and Jessie dies in November.  So she had a newborn and lost a toddler.   I haven’t found any family records on this, but the So. Carolina Health records say that the area was under quarantine for “typhoid, dyssentary and diarrhea.”

Eva Davis was born Jun 25,1900 and died Jul 21,1901.  Again, another heart breaker.  The only records I can find are that they introduce a new kind of planting of strawberries with a growth powder.  Its more likely that that it is the “hot’ season and she got the “fevers”
